What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants typically come in three parts: the post, abutment, and restoration. The implant is the titanium post that fuses with the jawbone after surgical placement. It mimics the tooth’s natural root, providing continuous stimulation to the bone to prevent resorption (shrinking). A metal abutment is then placed on top to ensure the restoration stays in place, which can be a customized crown, bridge, or denture.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

At Main Line Dental Group, we don’t need to refer patients to an outside implant specialist. Instead, we have our own in-house prosthodontist, Dr. Williams, who will happily perform the entire procedure from start to finish.

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation: Dr. Williams will go over your medical history with you as well as the state of your oral health. Based on his findings, he will determine if you can immediately receive dental implants or if you require additional treatment to improve the health and stability of your mouth and jawbone.
  • Dental Implant Surgery: Once you are cleared, you will undergo dental implant surgery in our Wayne dental office. You’ll receive local anesthesia before having each dental implant placed into its strategic location along your jawbone.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment: After closing the gum tissue and placing protective healing caps, Dr. Williams will send you home to recover. This process requires spending 4-6 months allowing your implants to fuse with the bone (osseointegration). Once this happens and you’re fully healed, you will come back to our office to receive your metal abutments (which will connect your new teeth to the implant posts).
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s): Before you’re able to start enjoying your new smile to its fullest, we will need to place your custom restoration. This may be a dental crown, bridge, or denture depending on how many teeth you are missing.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There is no other form of tooth replacement that matches the benefits that dental implants can provide. One of the most valuable advantages is their longevity, as they’re capable of lasting a lifetime with basic maintenance and care. In addition, dental implants look completely natural and feel like regular teeth, making it easier to eat the foods you love because of the increased bite strength. Not to mention, their ability to provide stimulation to your jawbone will reduce your chances of experiencing facial collapse.
